So you wanna know about Orange County?

Why? What is so important about OC that you REALLY need to know about it? Well, I'll tell you some stuff anyway.

Orange County is located just south of Los Angeles County. Contrary to popular belief it is NOT part of LA. All of OC is like one big suburb. It's sort of nightmarish in that way. As of current I don't have a .GIF image of the county (anyone who happens to have one, please send it to me so I can include it here) but I can name many of the more important cities (important meaning I can remember them offhand at the moment). Here they are:

I don't mean to leave any out, but if I did please let me know.

Some interesting facts about OC:

  • Yorba Linda is the birthplace of Richard Milhouse "Tricky Dick" Nixon, a dubious honor at best. It is also the current home of the Richard M. Nixon Library, Birthplace, and Burial Site. The museum is actually somewhat neat, whether you're a libbie like me or a diehard conservative like the rest of OC.
  • Michelle Pfeiffer was once Ms. Orange County.
  • Kevin Costner attended High School in Orange.
  • Most of Orange County was once part of a huge rancho owned by the Yorba family, particularly Bernardo Yorba (who is the namesake of my Jr. High).
  • OC recently went bankrupt due to some shifty bonds dealing. Most of the cities are OK because they didn't take part in the deal, but the county is screwed.
  • OC was once designated as one of the most conservative, if not the most conservative, counties in the country. I happen to be a Democrat, when the weather is fair that is.

That's pretty much it. If you know anything extra about OC and would like to see it here, tell me.

    Addendum:

You're probably wondering why I know so darn much about the place. Well, I've lived there for 18 years of my life so I'm bound to pick up some stuff. They've tried to do some civic pride stuff for years and such and I guess a lot of it stuck with me. For more historical info on OC look for anything written by Jim Sleeper, one of OC's top historians. His wife, Enola Sleeper, was my English teacher in High School. She was way cool.
