Dave Brubeck Slept Here

Driving back from church this morning, I noticed that they just renamed the park down the street. It was called the “Concord Avenue Community Park”. Now it’s “Dave Brubeck Park”.

Dave Brubeck?

Brubeck is one of my favorite jazz musicians. You’ve heard his music - “Take Five” is played anytime someone wants to make something seem cool. The song’s coolness halo effect is very strong. “Time Out” is one of my favorite albums, solid and consistent and just plain jazz cool.

Turns out Brubeck was born in Concord. Who knew? In 1920 when he was born, Concord was practically the edge of civilization in the Bay Area, a dinky little ink spot on the map. It’s grown considerably since, but it still pales in fame to its more popular neighbors Walnut Creek, Berkeley, San Francisco, etc. So to know there’s this little touch of fame here is very nifty.
