The Two-Ton Floppy Disk

Lest you ever question how far we’ve come with technology in the last 30 years or so, check out this 500 kilobyte hard drive from 1975, the year of my birth.

For some perspective - Remember those 5 1/4″ floppy diskettes from the 80s? The big ones that were made of cardboard and a disk of the same material used in cassette tapes? Those held 360 Kb, more than half what this thing apparently held. And that was just a few short years in difference. It leads me to question whether the poster meant to say 500 megabytes. Even if that’s the case, the hard drive in your iPod - the one that holds 20G - is only about 1″ x 1″ and it holds at least 40 times more data than this thing if it’s a 500Meg drive. HUGE advances.

Still no flying cars, though.
