Age of Consent

Posted August 12th, 2005

I think we all know where I stand these days on the censorship or adult materials and, in particular lately, the whole Grand Theft Auto: Sand Andreas “Hot Coffee” flap, so I’ll spare you of another edition what my wife refers to as “Rob’s soap box”. However, this post on Slashdot regarding how parents ignore the age appropriate suggestions on games, made me think of a blip out of America: The Book by The Daily Show cast. See, the difference between the “Mature Audiences” game rating and the “Adults Only” game rating is just one year of age – that is, for MA you should be 17 or older to play it and, for AO, you should be 18 or older. Why does it make sense to make teens wait a year to play “Adults-Only” games? Well, as John Stewart might say:

Self-explanatory. 19 years is an extraordinarily long time to wait to be able to see boobies. And 17 years? Please, 17? Get fucking serious.
