Runaway Train

Posted June 20th, 2003

Wow! I sent the blog link from yesterday about the SF Mob to Boing Boing and SmartMobs.com and they both posted them (Thanks a TON Cory and Howard!). I said that I was looking for a critical mass of about 50 people. As of this writing, I’m about four away from that. Holy freakin’ smokes!

So, I have a couple of ideas and (thanks to co-conspirator Ben, who will have a link once we get his site up and running) I think I’ve settled on one that will be a good first time meet-n-greet while potentially benefiting some folks in need. Look for it some time early next week!

If this works out, I’m in the midst of planning and building a smallish site to host other flocks/mobs and hand over the reins to a community of people rather than one guy. I like the idea of a community of people flocking together for one brief shining moment, either as simple performance art or to do something for the good of things. The Manhattan Mob that recently got a lot of attention and inspired me to do this did a couple of things that sounded like fun but came off in my eyes as something of a public prank. I like pranks, but I really like the idea of using the power of a group to do something positive for everyone involved (c’mon everyone, join hands and let’s sing a chorus of Kum-bye-ya!).

One quick note: I have absolutely NO political agenda here. None. It’s a social experiment that I’m hoping will come off as a positive experience. So, come to have fun, come to meet the stranger you pass on the street every day, but leave the protest signs at home. And if you have idea, questions, concerns, etc, never ever be afraid to just drop me a line. I’m interested in making this a fun community, so I’m totally open to listening to whatever you guys have to say. You can also post in the boards here to discuss everything openly.

I’m really looking forward to this. Thanks in advance to all of you who plan on attending.
