Rainbow Coalition

Wow. When I was in Jr. High and High School, I had all kinds of lame books targeted to the “Young Adult” audience foisted on me, but never anything that discussed group oral sex. Reading IS fundamental, apparently.

I haven’t read this book, nor do I really want to (the cheesy pulls on the Amazon page totally turned me off… that, plus it’s supposed to be a cautionary tale, and I have enough of those of my own). I actually *have* heard of rainbow parties, but only as a bizarre reference on the Showtime series “Huff”. It does sound more like urban myth than reality, and I never would have thought of such a thing were it not explained to me. Which makes me think that, rather than provide a manual of what not to do, some enterprising young folks may take a read of this and consider, “Hey, neat idea. And since it’s in a book it must be cool.”

So I’m torn on this one. On the one hand, I find it sort of interesting and almost positive to have sex addressed in a young readers guide in a frank manner, especially since we’re living in an age where, let’s face it, no amount of sheltering will keep kids away from it (thanks for nothing, Internet!). On the other hand… rainbow parties? Like I said, I fear it’ll entice the youth of America to go out and create such a problem rather than fix one that already exists. And, seriously, if we’re going to address sexuality with our kids in a frank manner, don’t you think we should start off by hitting the obvious ones? Like heavy petting and sexual experimentation? Or, like, waiting until “it feels right” or whatever? Do we need to jump right into the 70s orgy-tastic group sex? Just sayin’.
