Compare and contrast the reports of the most recent terror event as reported by CNN and as reported by the BBC. Notice that CNN doesn’t talk too much about the investigation itself, while the BBC goes into some detail, quoting Tony Blair as he praises the investigators.
The Department of Homeland Security has gotten a lot of flak for being wasteful, arbitrary in how and who they protect and, at the end of the day, being more or less ineffective. The foiling of this plot would seem to indicate a victory for them, and I have no doubt that the current administration will spin it as such. But read between the lines – this was all the UK’s victory. Between their DHS equivalent, Scottland Yard and MI5, they were able to track these guys and get them well before anything happened. Tony Blair briefed our president last night as the situation was happening.
It’s true that our guys probably knew about it, but it was the Brits who told them. Don’t be fooled into thinking Bush’s new, scary America is working. It’s not.
